CODE responded on an emergency basis to contain an oil sheen/spill on the Arthur Kill River at an active chemical processing plant in Carteret, NJ.
Investigations were conducted to determine the source of the fuel oil sheen and appropriate clean-up measures were implemented including setting of containment booms and skimming of the collected oil. The investigation determined that the oil seep was coming from an area that had been previously landfilled with industrial chemicals including air reactive phosphorous.
In an effort to avoid disturbing the air reactive chemicals and causing potential fires, CODE installed 150 feet of PZ- 40 sheet pile to depths of 35' along the waterway as an Emergency Bulk Head. Installation of the bulk head effectively contained the oil seep and made routine oil collection maintenance possible.
