CODE was contracted by Yonkers Contracting Company to work on the Edgemere Landfill Superfund Site closure project in Rockaway (Brooklyn), Queens County, NY. This $42 million project involved closure and capping of a 110-acre municipal/industrial landfill constructed of more than 2.5 million cy of dredged sand fill. Leachate from the site had resulted in VOC, BNAE, and inorganic contamination to groundwater and soil/sediment within the existing landfill and the Jamacia Bay tidewater sediments.
CODE provided environmental engineering and health and safety oversight for the project. CODE personnel worked hand-in-hand with Yonkers on all aspects of construction, including:
Sediment dredging from the Bay (11,000+ cy);
Deployment/maintenance of turbidity barriers;
Installation/maintenance of erosion/sediment controls;
Environmental Health and Safety (EHS)monitoring;
Relocation/consolidation/re-contouring of 500,000+ cy of site debris;
Bulkhead renovation and construction of new barge unloading facilities;
Barging of import fill materials;
Expansion of the gas vent systems;
Monitoring of explosive methane gasses;
Testing/monitoring for drums, drum fragments, and hazardous wastes;
Import/placement of 900,000+ cy of fill material; and
Installation of site cap (synthetic liner system and vegetation layer).
CODE worked in close consultation Yonkers and the NYC Department of Sanitation to ensure that all work performed in a safe manner compliant with applicable local, state and federal regulations.
