Consider the following case:

Code was retained to develop a Remedial Action Workplan designed to delineate, excavate, transport and off-site dispose of approximately 2,500 tons of contaminated soil located at a site in Connecticut. Because rocks made up a large volume of the material to be removed, Code proposed an alternate remediation technology which reduced the volume of material to be shipped off-site by over 60 percent.

Using specialized equipment, Code segregated the soil and rock. The rocks were crushed, washed to meet regulatory standards, and later used as backfill.

Soils were set aside to await off-site disposal. Washwaters used to clean the rock were collected, run through an on-site phase separation system, and reused to avoid generating excessive amounts of wastewater requiring disposal.

The process was so efficient that the client expanded Code's contract to treat an additional 9,000 tons of contaminated soil and rock located in another area of the site which was to be capped and monitored.

Code's creative solution not only reduced the volume of material shipped off-site, it also reduced the amount of backfill required for restoration. Furthermore, it allowed Code's client to avoid the long-term commitment associated with construction and compliance monitoring of a 30 year landfill cap.
